Prime Minister Agriculture Irrigation Scheme
As you are aware, water is required for irrigation in the fields. The fields of the farmers may ruin if crops are not properly watered. This problem will be solved under PMKSY 2023, and farmers will be provided with water for cultivation. Benefits will also be provided to members of self-help groups, trusts, cooperative societies, incorporated companies, groups of productive farmers, and members of other eligible institutions under this scheme.
The central government has set aside Rs 50,000 crore for the Prime Minister Agriculture Irrigation Scheme 2023. The Cabinet Committee has decided to extend the PMKSY for another five years until 2026 at Economic Affairs meeting. The total expenditure is expected to be Rs 93068 crore. The expansion of this scheme will benefit approximately 22 lakh farmers, 2.5 lahks of whom are Scheduled Castes and 2 lakhs are Scheduled Tribes.

The Objective of the Prime Minister Agriculture Irrigation Scheme
Under the PM Agriculture Irrigation Scheme, water will be supplied to every farm to increase crop yields in the country. And, it greatly emphasises maximising water resource utilisation to prevent damage caused by subsequent drought impulses. This allows farmers to make better use of available resources while increasing yields. Also, the income of the farmers will rise.
The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana will raise the living standards of the country’s farmers. Capacity building, training, and awareness campaigns, including low-cost publications, the use of Pico projectors, and low-cost films, to encourage the use of potential water sources through technological, agricultural, and management practices such as community irrigation.
Benefits of the Prime Minister Agriculture Irrigation Scheme
- The government will subsidise irrigation equipment under this scheme to provide a sufficient amount of water to farmers cultivating the country for irrigation in their fields.
- To address water scarcity, the PMKSY allows farmers to irrigate their crops.

Eligibility Criteria for Applying this Scheme
- Farmers must own agricultural land to benefit from this programme.
- Farmers of all nationalities will be eligible recipients of this programme.
- Self-help groups, trusts, cooperative societies, incorporated companies, members of producer farmers’ groups, and other eligible institutions will also receive benefits under the PM Krishi Sinchai Yojana.
- Institutions and beneficiaries who have farmed the land under a lease agreement for at least seven years will be eligible for PM Krishi Sinchai Yojana benefits.
- Contract farming is another source of this eligibility.

Features of PM Krishi Sichai Yojana
- PMKSY will make water available for irrigation in all fields.
- Under this scheme, the government will receive water sources such as water harvesting, groundwater development, and so on.
- If the farmer purchases irrigation equipment, they will receive a subsidy.
- PM Agriculture Irrigation Yojana will save both time and money.
- The government will also promote drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation through this scheme.
- If crops receive the proper type of irrigation, their yield will increase.
- This scheme is open to all farmers who have their own farms and water source.

PMKSY has several schemes, including the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP) of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation (RD&GR), the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) of the Department of Land Resources (DoLR), and The On-Farm Water Management (OFWM) of the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation.
As part of its mission to increase agricultural production and farmers’ income, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has established a fund of 5000 crores that will give the money to states at a reduced rate of interest to support micro-irrigation.
