About National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme

The National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship is government-sponsored. The Ministry of Human Resource Development’s Department of School Education & Literacy has implemented this scheme to financially support deserving pupils from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

NMMS provides poor students with a scholarship worth INR 12,000 annually to encourage them to finish their secondary education. The MCM scholarship, which becomes active in November, provides close to 100,000 scholarships to outstanding students each year.

Overview of the NMMS Scheme

Objectives of the National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship

The NMMS Scholarship aims to encourage brilliant and underprivileged students to finish their secondary and upper secondary levels of education to reduce school dropout rates after the eighth grade. Every year, students in grades 9 through 12 take two tiers of state-level selection examinations to be eligible for the National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship.

Award in NMMS Scholarship 2022

Every year, NMMS awards 100,000 scholarships to the chosen students, for INR 12,000 annually, or INR 1,000 per month. The State Bank of India (SBI) pays the scholarship money all at once under the National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship.

Through the Public Financial Management System, the funds are directly put into the accounts of the students (PFMS). Based on the number of students enrolled in classes 7 and 8 and their population in each state, the amounts of scholarships are distributed to each State and UT.

• Students in class 9 receive a scholarship in one lump sum, i.e., INR 12,000 each academic year.
• The scholarship is extended each year until the student completes his or her Higher Secondary level of study (Class 12).
• NMMS encourages the candidates to receive clear promotions into a higher class each year.

Eligibility Criteria of National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship

This NMMS scholarship plan requires all candidates to meet the qualifying standards listed below to be eligible for the selection exam held to grant the scholarship. It is only available to meritorious and underprivileged students in India.

• Candidates for this NMMS scholarship must be full-time students enrolled in class 9 after receiving a clear promotion from class 8 and possess a minimum GPA of 55% or above.
• The candidates need to be students of the government-sponsored, locally run, or government-aided schools.
• To continue receiving a scholarship in upper secondary school, the candidate must get at least 60% on the class 10 board test.
• The scholarship recipient must successfully advance from class 11 on the first try with a score of 55% or equal to continue the scholarship in class 12. The SC/ST students are also getting relaxation of 5%.
• The yearly family income of the aspirants should not exceed INR 1.5 lakh.
• Students enrolling in NVS, KVS, Sainik schools, or private institutions are also ineligible for this NMMS scholarship.

NMMS Scholarship 2022 – Important Dates

Every year, the NMMS scholarship is typically announced in August, with an October deadline. This application window is a rough estimate because it changes from year to year. The scholarship giver may decide to revise it the next year. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is September 30, 2022, for the school year 2022–2023.

Application Process of National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship 2022

If students aim to apply for NMMS, they must ensure that they meet all of the qualifying requirements for this MCM award. The applicants can then apply for the scholarship online via NSP.

The step-by-step application instructions provided below will assist students in completing their NMMS scholarship form without difficulties.

• The candidates must first register as new users on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) by providing all the necessary information.
• The scholarship applicants need scanned copies of all required papers on hand as they start the application process.
• The applicants need to provide documents like educational qualifications, Aadhaar card number, school enrolment number, bank details, and state residence to apply for this scholarship.
• When a candidate registers on NSP, an application ID is produced. This application ID is used on NSP as the ‘Login ID’ and for future reference.
• While candidates enrolled in classes 11 and 12 must apply under the Post Matric scholarship category, those enrolled in classes 9 and 10 must do so under the Pre-Matric scholarship category.
• The applicant must be cautious while entering information such as his or her name, date of birth, email address, identity details, and cell phone number.
• Upload all required papers and save the information as a draught.
• The candidate must submit the completed application form after checking that all information is valid and relevant.

NMMS Scholarship Selection Criteria

NMMS is a Central Government scholarship initiative, although its selection test is held by each State/UT for their respective students. The NCERT has created the criteria for these tests, which include a mental aptitude test and a scholastic aptitude test. Applicants must complete each test in no more than 90 minutes. On the other hand, time is given extra for tests for children with exceptional needs.

Selection Criteria of NMMS Scholarship

Selection of fresh Awardee Students

Each state/UT administers its test to choose candidates for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship. The examination is held at the class-VIII level. Students who meet the qualifying criteria must pass both examinations, namely the Mental Ability Test (MAT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) under the NMMSS exam, with at least 40% in aggregate for these two tests. This cut-off point is 32% for SC/ST students.

Selection of Renewal Awardees Students

For the scholarship to continue (with a 5% relaxation for SC/ST applicants) in the subsequent higher grades, the winners must receive a minimum of 60% in Class X. The recipients must successfully advance from class IX to class X and from class XI to class XII on their first try to continue receiving the scholarship in classes X and XII.

Disbursal of Scholarship

The scheme is completely integrated with the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) starting in 2018–19. The Ministry approves the release of cash from the Annual Budget Provision to SBI, the implementing bank for the programme that pays out scholarships to students directly into their bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS).

Result Declaration of National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship

After the students have taken the selection exam, each state releases a list of students who have qualified for the MAT and SAT by scoring at least 40% on each test. The following is a summary of the considerations made to arrive at the final student list for NMMS.

• According to the regulations, candidates must receive at least 40% on both the MAT and SAT exams. For restricted categories, the standards for scoring are relaxed. The required percentage for them to be eligible for this MCM scholarship is 32%.
• Additionally, candidates must have received at least 55% on their class 8 final test. SC/ST students receive a 5% mark reduction.
• To receive the advantages of NMMS, applicants must meet all of the qualifying requirements.
