The Union Ministry of Home Affairs approved the creation of the Village Defence Guards Scheme (VDGS) in the state of Jammu and Kashmir on August 14, only a few days before the country’s Independence Day. Union Minister Jitendra Singh expressed thanks for the effort by thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Village Defence Guards Scheme( VDGS) is a defence-related scheme, recently introduced for the state of Jammu & Kashmir. This program was also introduced at the same time as other Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav initiatives. It’s primary objective was enhancing security in Jammu’s border regions.

On August 14th, a defence-related initiative was launched for the state of Jammu & Kashmir. This campaign launched concurrently with the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav to improve security in Jammu’s border regions. The village defence card will burdened with the obligation of preserving communal installations and infrastructure facilities inside the bounds of their village beginning on August 15th.

• The program organizes a small group of volunteer armed civilians in specific villages along the borders and in-depth areas of the Jammu division. • The Village Defence Guards would be in charge of safeguarding community installations and infrastructure inside their village, as well as conducting night and day patrols.

• The first group will get rupees 4500 per month per individual. Whereas, the second category will consist of individuals who willingly join the village defence organization. They will receive a monthly uniform fee of rupees 4,000.
• Village Chowkidars and Lumberdars will assist Village Defence Groups in “vulnerable regions.”

Village Defence Guards Scheme Eligibility

• This initiative will be open to ex-servicemen and ex-police officers from the community.
• Able-bodied young men who are proficient in the use of weaponry and ammunition and are willing to contribute to the community’s welfare and the village’s security.
